Life lessons I learned from not dancing ballet
I can vividly remember that glorious moment when I first had my pointe class. And according to my ballet teacher, my feet don't wobble unlike the other first-timers on pointes. I was beyond happy because I felt as if that it was a sign that I am good. really good. and I have great potential.
I WAS AM A BUNHEAD. My world was pretty much centered around ballet. I go to ballet class twice a week, every after class, ever since I was 4 years old. I dance whenever I am given the opportunity --- family events, school activities, intermissions, opening prayers, and recitals and shows. I've also been recognized and awarded. I was even given a scholarship by Ms. Vella C. Damian herself. I was seriously on fire as a ballerina (e.g. My blog title: Raellarina - The Ballerina on Fire) and I guess that I was on the peak of really, really making it out there when everything just died and crushed. It wasn't really a choice. I didn't quit. I mean, if I was given a choice, I would really, really rather be a ballerina than what I am about to become in a few years.
I was seriously depressed in the first half of the year when I stopped taking ballet lessons and I was literally crying every night, and whenever I remember my ballet days. But perhaps, there is really more to life than just dancing ballet.
Four years has passed since I stopped taking ballet lessons and I must say, it was painful, depressing, and seriously difficult. And during this years, I have come to conclude these life lessons I learned from not dancing ballet:
1. I really cannot live my life to the fullest without ballet.
2. It's really hard to not dance ballet and take lessons formally.
3. I love dancing in big theaters and having curtain calls --- hearing all the applause the spectators has to offer. It makes me feel special for just trying to express myself.
4. I like sacrificing everything just for the sake of ballet.
5. I have come to realize that I excel in class because I dance ballet. During my elementary and high school years, I managed to be excellent in my academics despite the fact that I take ballet classes and it pretty much eat up my time. Perhaps this is because I have twice a week to relax, unwind, forget about everything, and express myself. When I entered college, I no longer take ballet classes and in my 4 years of study, I still haven't made it in being a Dean's lister whereas during my elementary and high school days, I was a consistent top student because I take ballet lessons. Therefore, I really do excel in class because I dance ballet.
6. I may have stopped taking formal training but ballet will always and forever be present in my life and soul. I always end up using ballet in whatever I do that is not ballet-related. The best example would perhaps be my thesis right now. I am in my last year in college and I am taking up Bachelor of Science major in Interior Design. I am working on the AFP Theater in which I have performed several times.
7. Not having formal ballet lessons made me NOT A QUITTER. I'll be back in the world of real ballet soon enough.
8. I have learned that, "if there's a will, there's a way".
9. I still have time to make a name in the ballet world and it's never too late. I'll turn 21 this year. I still have 19 years to go back and dance, and go to Paris or New York or Russia or Australia and fulfill my ballet career. A dancer's life somehow ends at 40? I think. But I am looking up to Lisa Macuja. :)))
10. Dream constantly, do things to achieve those dreams, and pray. Everything happens for a reason. God's ways are better than mine.
11. There is nothing more to life than ballet. period. But I think I can excel in being an Interior Designer- slash - ballerina.
Apparently, my life lessons from not dancing ballet are still, ballet-related. haha. I reckon one just can't take away what she's born to do. =3 Let me know if you have a passion too which you love more than anything else in this world, like me with ballet! Take care & God bless :)))

Those are some valuable lessons. I gave up ice skating when I was 19 (after 17 years) because of an injury, I still miss it...
ReplyDeletehttp://bellapummarola.blogspot.it/
awwww. :"""( do you still plan on getting back to skating even after your injury? Michael Christian Martinez (the first Filipino Winter Olympian) was injured for a couple of times but he still skates and he just made history. :") I hope you won't stop skating :(
DeleteThese are great lessons, I love it how your passion is in it.
ReplyDeleteI think that once you start practicing some art form you will never get away from it. I can feel ballet soaking into my skin more and more after every time I dance. I hope you will be back to formal practice asap. Ballet world still needs people like you!
ReplyDeletePerhaps you are right. Once you start practicing some art form you will never get away from it. :) I mean, I usually like trying different things and I get tired of them somehow so I stop doing it so I can try more new things. But with ballet, it's different. I just can't live without it. :)) Thank you so much for your sweet, sweet words. You really encouraged me. If I can't go back to formal training by October (semestral break), more or less, I will be back after my college graduation next year! :)) So basically, ballet is my way of graduating on time! hehe. Thanks again! God bless =)
DeleteIn my opinion ballet is hard hard work! People like u are my inspiration)
