Dada
L.H.O.O.Q. by Marcel Duchamp
(1919)
"[Duchamp] turned Mona Lisa into a bearded lady, implying the bisexual character of Leonardo and himself, as well as the relation of Mona Lisa to Leonardo's unconscious fantasy of the phallic mother. "

I remembered the time when we laughed so hard at our History of World Arts class as these artworks flashed on the big screen! I thought that Marcel Duchamp and the rest of the dadaist artists were just playing around and I'm even a better artist than them!
But that's where I'm wrong. In fact, there's more to this than meets the eye.
When every major power in Europe was drown into World War I beginning in 1914, the dark side of science and technology was revealed. The ideal of progress was shown to be utterly hollow, and 9 million people lost their lives in one of the bloodiest wars in history. Thus, a group of artists waiting out the war in Zurich, in neutral Switzerland, banded together in a protest art movement called Dada.
The term Dada is a nonsense word but for these artists, it has a deeper meaning. They felt this way so they embraced the irrationality and the chance of humanity itself. Now that we're in the 21st century, we define Dada as the movement based on distrust of rationality and "progress".
Marcel Duchamp was the famous artist during this movement. There was even the "Duchampian Readymade"which asserts that the transformation of the artwork by the artist can be only selection. It implies that art is not the result of a crafting process, but rather a naming process. I like the way Marcel Duchamp introduced Art t the world. He gave ordinary people something to think about too like "What is Art?" and "How do we know it's art?"
As for me, "Art is the way of expressing one's self and it need not to be related to other people but the artist himself. But great artist can capture and touch other people's hearts while he expresses himself."
So, what can you say about this art movement called Dada? =)
