The tiny house movement is a social initiative which goal is to leave big and pricey houses and move into a much smaller home. Small houses have something between 200 and 400 square feet of space and the way of organizing them can be challenging. Of course, with some detailed planning, everything can be done in no time. Most of the people spend years of their lives in rented apartments and rooms and tend to forget about those times once they sign a lease for the new bigger house. Yes, you’ll need a house with three or four bedrooms in case you have a big family. But, you should be aware that once your kids are old enough to take care of themselves, or they’re simply leaving for college, you’ll end up with plenty of unused space. This space will cost you money in the long run, and there’s no good reason to continue paying for something you don’t need. On the other hand, if you would like to have more privacy for yourself and your partner, you should really consider moving into a tiny house.

When living in a tiny house you’ll see the difference in utility bills immediately. Other than that, your new home will be much cheaper than the big one. You’ll actually earn some extra cash by selling the old one and put it into a new business or get yourself a vacation you'll remember for the rest of your life. Owning a tiny house is a responsible and self-sustained solution since you’ll be affecting the environment much less. All those houses are made of natural materials and don’t need major expensive repairs. Another good thing about them is that they don’t take much space. Therefore, if tiny house community grows, more and more free space will be available to use for other purposes than just living there.

The most valuable lesson we as a community should learn considers consumerism. Tiny house movement is fighting for awareness of people’s lifestyle. The mass production forced the society to spend money reckless and people forgot their purpose on this planet. Living in a tiny house will make you more active and creative since you’ll be challenged with a lack of space and you won't be able to buy anything more than you actually need. Of course, you’ll still be getting valuable presents and that stuff should be saved. Since your new tiny house has limited free space, you should consider one of the available lock up storage solutions in your area. That way, you’ll keep the stuff which is valuable and leave extra space at home.
Ways of helping the movement
In case you find that tiny house movement is a great cause, go ahead and join them by moving to a small house. You may start with a trailer or a van first, just to experiment and see if that kind of life suits you. Once you are ready, go ahead and sell your house. More and more people are getting depressed and unhappy and all of them have great jobs and big houses. It doesn’t seem that those facts are a recipe for happiness since a lot of them are thinking about quitting the job and living away from the masses. A lot of small home owners placed their houses in the woods or in a rural environment and it looks like they’re completely satisfied with their new lifestyle. Keep in mind that authorities aren’t that enthusiastic about the whole idea, so make sure to co-operate and promote the movement the best way you can.

Keep in mind that there are a lot of issues that can emerge if you decide to live in a tiny house. There’s a pretty good chance you’ll get ridiculed and misunderstood because of your decision. Use that bad vibe to motivate yourself. With the tiny house, you’ll need some new skills and a totally different mindset. After a few months in nature, you’ll feel like a completely different person. Your new life will be less stressful since you won’t need to clean large rooms and fix numerous devices. Your new home will be filled with necessary stuff you’ll use on daily basis. Once your mind is free of planning and thinking about numerous issues, you’ll see once again what it means to really be alive.

When we moved, we downsized into a smaller home, so I know about trying to cram all your belongings into a small area, but I've never seen a home this small, 200-400 sq. ft. Here in California, the smaller homes are 800-1300 sq. ft. These are some good ideas, Rae, thanks for sharing. : )
