How To Beat the Heat : The Filipino Way

ANG INEEEETTTTTTTTT!!!! (IT'S SOOOOOOO HOOOOOT!!)

This is probably every Filipino's dialog every minute of every hour of everyday because it really is so hot even at night. Though it's already a rainy season (July is almost here), it's still so hot!

And in lieu with Manila's sweltering temperature, here's a list on how to beat the heat, the Filipino way! --And this is not just the summer heat but the heat all throughout the year!

1. HALO - HALO

Halo-halo is a popular Filipino dessert with mixtures of shaved ice, evaporated milk, and so many other ingredients like sago, gulaman, banana, beans, nata de coco, fruits, ice cream, leche flan, and so on!

Halo is a Filipino term for "Mix".

Because it's so hot in the Philippines, you can actually eat this even when it's not summer! And there are various establishments which offers halo-halo including Razon's (their halo-halo is my favorite as I don't like beans), Chowking, Mang Inasal, and even Jollibee! But you can buy halo-halo even in the corners of the street when it's summer!

2. ICE SCRAMBLE

Ice scramble is more budget-friendly than the halo-halo as its ingredients are much simpler but both halo-halo and ice-scramble serve the same purpose --- to quench the heat we experience!

The Philippines actually has a variety of this dessert-merienda such as mais con yelo, saging con yelo, and so much more.

3. THE ELECTRIC FAN HACKS

If you don't have an ACU, or if you don't want to turn on your ACU because your electricity bill will be so high if you turn it on every single day, then you find ways to beat the heat. And here are a few hacks that Filipinos do with their ever-trusted electric fans:

A. Put ice in the electric fan

Of course this works. You just have to put a bucket or a palanggana (basin) so the drops of water will not destroy your floor and it will not be a hassle to clean it out. Also, do keep in mind that because it's so hot, the ice will melt in just a few minutes.

At least you had cooler air! :)

B. Tutok mo electric fan sayo (Point the electric fan to you) and press that highest button (no. 3 or no. 4)

Probably a hack that doesn't need any explanation. But don't do this if you just finished a sports activity or something as you will risk your health!

C. Use a portable electric fan

When commuting, going out, or just when you're lying in your bed and you don't want to move because it's so hot!

Anyhow, this is a an awesome alternative if you don't want to use a fan.

"Manila's heat is like the heat you feel at the beach minus the ocean and the sand plus cement and smoke."

4. Go Shirtless!

The Filipino men goes shirtless! It's a normal thing actually, and in every corner and eskinitas, you'll see shirtless guys.

5. The shorter the clothes, the better

For the Filipino women, going short is definitely an option --- a short shorts, sleeveless tops, and cropped tops. It's not that they want to show skin but they just don't have an option. It's like, 'suffer from the heat and be sweaty or wear comfy, comfy clothing pieces'.

But Filipinas better be careful too because you know how Filipinos are, so going short is also avoided to not be ma-bastos (cat call) especially when you're commuting alone or going somewhere alone.

6. Take a bath 3 times a day.

Watch this youtube video and learn how to take a bath in public using a poso (water pump). haha
I once experienced using a poso when I was on vacation in Iligan City, not to take a bath but to fill a pail of water.

Filipinos usually take a bath more than once a day because it's just so friggin' hot that submerging yourself in cold water is a way to ease the heat.

7. BUKO

A way to refresh is by drinking buko juice! Because the Philippines is a tropical country, buko vendors are everywhere in Manila even if coconut trees are no longer in the city. Still though, there are buko vendors everywhere and you can drink fresh ones! They also have cooooooold fresh buko juice.

8. THE BEACH IS THE WAY TO GO

Boracay, Philippines

Lastly, Filipinos can go to the beach anytime and anywhere without hassle! There are so many beaches near Manila and when Filipinos want to beat the heat, they'll just go to the beach!

These are just some of the ways on how to beat the heat in a Filipino way! I personally do these things and yes, they are helpful.

To end this post, I just want to say that when it gets extremely hot, you just wanna do this all day!
