What I've Learned About Personal Style

Personal style is referred to that way because it’s exactly that; personal. You can wear whatever you like. Channel any era or trend you want, and that’s your personal style. You make an impression on people with your individual style, so it’s a good idea to try to stand out from the crowd a little. Here’s what I’ve learned about personal style:

If You Like it, Wear it

If you like something, you have to wear it. Sometimes I’ll be drawn to a certain item and I’m not really sure why. It might be the pattern, the cut, or something else entirely. If I’m drawn to it then I wear it! I try not to let outside factors influence me either. If my friends don’t like it, who cares? They’re not the ones who have to wear it! My personal style is all about telling people a bit about who I am. Wouldn’t it be boring if everybody was the same?

Getting it Wrong is Part of the Fun

Sometimes, you might get things a little ‘wrong’. Maybe you’ll look back at a picture and think, ‘what was I thinking?!’. I’d much rather experiment, make mistakes, and learn more about myself than play it safe. Fashion is supposed to be fun!

Mixing Styles is A-OK

Mixing styles is more than OK. It’s one of the best things about getting dressed! One of my favourite styles is ‘sports luxe’. This is because I’m a bit of a tomboy at heart who likes to be comfortable - yet I still want to look like a sassy female! I’ll usually put a pair of cool running shoes with a long camel coat, sweater, and some wet look leggings. There are all kinds of ways you can do it. Use your imagination and create your own combinations. You’ll love it!

Knowing What Works on Your Body Type is Key

Although you should be free to express yourself in any way you choose, knowing what works for your body type is key to making anything look amazing. We all have a different body type and shape, and when you know just how to flatter it you’ll look incredible.

You Can Make a Huge Impact With Jewellery and Accessories

Accessories are so important, I can’t stress it enough! You can turn a plain outfit from drab to fab with the help of a few carefully placed accessories. A statement necklace can look amazing, but then so can a quirky bag. Make sure you show off your personality with the help of your favourite accessories too!

Hopefully, what I’ve learned about personal style can help you a lot too! All it takes is a little experimentation and you’ll soon find what you like. Some people like to stick to one style, others like to do a mash up, some are different from one day to the next. Whatever suits you! If you want to be more recognisable, consider having a trademark. For instance, in Confessions of a Shopaholic, it was her green scarf. Have fun! :)
