Why is the Little Black Dress a Classic?

Of finding out why the little black dress a classic timeless piece...

Being a 90s kid who loves the 60s so much, I wonder why the little black dress is a classic timeless piece. I mean, even Audrey Hepburn's iconic black gown in Breakfast at Tiffany's also left me mind-boggling on why it became so famous and iconic. I just don't get it. Well, Audrey's dress is really beautiful but I just didn't understand why in the world is she wearing a long black gown at the start of the movie when the sun is up and is shining so bright? I have nothing against Breakfast at Tiffany's because I've watched it xxx times already because I love the movie so much! It's just that my curiosity is creeping in.

Only after finding out about the 60s fashion during my interior design class fashion museum project that I understood why she's wearing a long gown during the day (long gown similar to pieces found at Black Homecoming of ihomecoming). And I also googled "why is the little black dress of Audrey Hepburn famous?".

Here is the reason behind it's fame according to wikipedia:

"The black Givenchy dress of Audrey Hepburn is a little black dress designed by Hubert de Givenchy and worn by Audrey Hepburn in the opening of the 1961 romantic comedy film Breakfast at Tiffany's. The dress is cited as one of the most iconic items of clothing in the history of the twentieth century and perhaps the most famous "little black dress" of all time and exerting a major influence on fashion itself by directly making it popular.

In a survey conducted in 2010 by LOVEFiLM, Hepburn's little black dress was chosen as the best dress ever worn by a woman in a film. In this respect, Helen Cowley, publisher of LOVEFiLM, declared: "Audrey Hepburn has truly made that little black dress a fashion staple which has stood the test of time despite competition from some of the most stylish females around." Hepburn's white dress and hat worn in My Fair Lady was voted sixth."

Well I guess that removes one curiosity off of the list. Aside from the design itself, Audrey Hepburn is very influential that she made her black Givenchy dress popular even up to this century!

But really now, why is the little black dress a classic? It's even made into songs!

In my quest of finding the answer to "why is the little black dress a classic?", i took the liberty to ask some of my favorite bloggers on their thoughts to this question.

"I think they are classic because they are so versatile and mean every person not only suits them but can add their own personality to them!" - Paige Joanna

"A little black dress is a classic & staple part of every girl's closet because it's so basic & easy to style. You can pair it up with boots to pumps & still look fashionable without losing your personal style. Besides, it's probably one of the first dresses you bought when you were just starting to experiment with your wardrobe. :)" -Sie Cajilig

Many believe that it is a "rule of fashion" that every woman should own a simple, elegant black dress which can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. The little black dress is considered essential since it is meant to be a staple of the wardrobe for many years and the design ideally should be as simple as possible.

These Black Homecoming Dresses from Ihomecoming are samples of what the ideal design of the little black dress should be. These pieces I'll show you are Ihomecoming black homecoming dresses that are very simple, elegant, classy, and really versatile.

The shop also offers little black dresses for the plus-size women. So that's definitely a plus factor as women come in different shapes and sizes. I think the shop did a great job on that and they even have many sophisticated and fabulous designs to choose from in all design category! Check-out these Black Homecoming of ihomecoming.

What makes the little black dress a classic is that, it's very versatile that owning it is a must! I guess the little black dress is more influential and more popular than the "little white dress" because black actually has effects that makes the wearer slimmer, thinner, and more sexy. I think (I'm not sure) black hugs the body shape more? Or that, because black suits any shape, color, and size. Also, it's so versatile that you can mix and match anything and everything inside your closet. Like, today you're sporty chic with your little black dress, sneakers, cap, and vest or jacket and then the next day you're a sophisticated classy lady with your little black dress, glittered stilettos, clutch, and jewelry! White can't do that, I mean white is also versatile but let's admit it, when a very pale person wear an all-white ensemble, it makes her paler. And when an all-white ensemble is worn by a dark-colored person, it makes her darker. So I guess that's kind of the point why the little black dress and even the Ihomecoming black homecoming dress is more of the "must-have" item in your closet than the "little white dress".

And ladies and gents, I guess that's the reason why the little black dress is a classic. :)
